Nourishing Neighbors honored for commitment to help end summer hunger and raise awareness for the USDA’s Summer EBT grocery benefits program

We are honored to announce that Albertsons Companies Foundation’s Nourishing Neighbors initiative has been awarded a Gold Halo Award in the Best Technology for Good Initiative for our collaboration on SummerEBT.org. Launched in June 2024, this website connects families to new summer grocery benefits, ensuring no child goes hungry when school is out. Presented by Engage for Good, these prestigious awards, selected by over 40 distinguished judges, honor individuals and campaigns redefining the social impact industry and challenging conventional best practices for corporate purposes.

Last year, Albertsons Cos. Foundation launched a collective effort to address childhood hunger during the summer. This coalition, comprising leading nonprofit organizations such as Feeding America®Food Research & Action CenterGift Card BankHunger Free AmericamReliefNo Kid HungryPartnership for a Healthier America, and WhyHunger, united to drive awareness and increase participation in the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer for Children Program (Summer EBT), also known as SUN Bucks.

As part of this initiative, the coalition launched SummerEBT.org providing families with a simple and efficient way to check their eligibility and connect to their state sign-up site. For families that live in states that are not participating, the website offers alternative food resources, such as the USDA Summer Meals program, and enables them to write to their elected representatives to advocate for their state’s participation in the program next summer.

“Childhood hunger is a complex problem that requires partners from across the food system to come together and collaborate,” said Christy Duncan Anderson, President and Executive Director of Albertsons Cos. Foundation. “Being recognized with a Gold Halo Award for our collective efforts to launch SummerEBT.org is such an honor as we continue our work to eliminate summer hunger today, tomorrow and forever.”
